Top 5 Distractions to Drivers

posted in: Road Safety 0

There were 26 fatalities in 2016 due to distracted driving in Australia. That may not sound like a large number but it was double what the average was for the five years preceding that. People know how dangerous distracted driving is yet it continues to happen. By being aware of the main distractions for drivers, you can take steps to avoid them and this will help you to be a safer driver.

1. Mobile phones

If you use a mobile phone while driving, you put your self and others at risk. This practice is exceedingly dangerous. Even glancing down for a few seconds at a high rate of speed allows you to pass a good distance without seeing the road adequately. Not only are mobile phones a distraction, they may cost you a lot of money in fines if you get pulled over using one while driving.

2. Eating and drinking

Many people like to eat on the go. However, it is not safe to eat while you are driving because you have to take at least one hand off the wheel. In addition, your eyes aren’t on the road all the time either.

3. Other passengers

Sometimes other people in the vehicle can pose quite a distraction. You may become animated during the conversation or turn to look at the other person too much. Children in the back seat who are too loud or rambunctious can cause a problem. All of these situations take your mind off of the task at hand, which is driving safely to your destination.

4. Accidents or vehicle breakdowns

Many people tend to get curious when they see an accident or someone broken down on the side of the road. Everyone wants to get a glimpse to see just what is going on. However, this can lead to rear-end collisions. Don’t let this distraction right outside your window get in your way.

5. Blaring radio

Whether you like to listen to the latest news on the radio or your favourite music, playing the radio too loud within the vehicle is a distraction. The loud sound in such a closed-in area will drown out any important signals you may need to hear outside such as sirens, horns, and so on. It also distracts you from giving your full attention to your driving.

Make the effort to practice safe driving by adhering to distraction-free driving. As you focus on careful driving you will increase your likelihood of making it to your destination safely.
